Inventing New Things to Improve Lives

No development can be fully embedded within a society the presence of invention. This is the method by which new things are brought onto the market to improve the general lifestyle of the public. They are also brought in to deal with a specific problem that may have been identified as a particular issue for the community. The thing with invention is that it can cover virtually all sections of the community in one way or the other.Without invention the community becomes stagnant and unable to impose any level of understanding on the society within which people live.

The role of the people who carry out invention has been constantly changing within the community. In some areas they are revered as saviors of the community while in others they are simply ignored. The truth is that without the efforts of these people the community would remain at a given level without any thought being given to continuous improvement or development. The world today is a hub of competition with each nation trying to secure a competitive advantage over the rest of the world community. If we do not take the time to implement invention as a must for all peoples then we are leaving ourselves open to the criticism that we have not improved on the legacy that was left for us by our forefathers.

Creations that Work

Such is the nature of the invention trail that many people fail to fully appreciate its role in society. We then give credence to people who use certain items with skill rather than going back to the people who are responsible for getting that product on the market in the first place. In fact the abuse of copyright and fake products indicates the level of society’s indifference towards people who are responsible for invention. This is something that is not adequately addressed by governments of all colors and persuasions. For them the critical issue is the collection of taxes. Once this is fulfilled the rest can get stuffed.

Those countries that continue to work on their invention schemes will be the leaders of tomorrow. The American president keeps talking about technology as the key to the prosperity of that nation. Unfortunately many of his calls fall on deaf ears. The world is configured to accept that invention is only for the geeks or people with vested interests. As we attempt to solve the problems of energy dependency it becomes clear that invention will play an important role in these matters.

There ought to be some educational schemes that encourage people to participate in invention as well as good remuneration packages that work as an incentive. The alternative is to let things drift and hope that someone else will pick up the tab and ensure that invention is once again at the heart of the developmental plan for the community. People who think about their communities on a long term basis will already have the knowledge about the impact of invention on lives.

Technological Development and Invention

These days everyone is talking about technological development as if it is the messiah that is going to save the world from extinction. It is very true that technological invention will become the new currency as the world develops. There is a fertile ground for new enhancements and products that are meant to improve the functionality of the technology that we all use. Antivirus programs are a fine example of a technological software invention that has developed alongside the growth of the internet and the endless possibilities that continue to emerge. Cloud Antivirus is an example of a software developer that has grown along side the internet and continually updated it's software to meet the challenges faced by internet threats.

There is even an argument that without invention, the technological world would not have been created in the first place. These days when one muses on the world, it is clear that the globe is a centerpiece for technological development and invention niches.

The personal computer has become a symbol of all that can be achieved with technological invention. The computer started off as a massive product that would only be used for industrial activities within specific sectors. For a very long time the ordinary person on the street was not really involved in either the creation or usage of the personal computer. As time went by it became clear that there was a need for an overhaul of the way that we looked at computing. Once this need was identified, technological invention started to play its role in implementing the vision.

The Personal Computer as an Invention

Through various technological invention schemes the personal computer was made much smaller and configured to work within the home. The personal computer then became an essential item for work and leisure. When people went to their offices, it would become almost impossible to avoid the overarching influence of the computer. However when they got home the influence would not end but continue with leisure activities. Some schools are even suggesting that the computer should follow the person even within the learning environment. That has been the influence and benefit of technological invention.

The development of the computer has not just been limited to the personal usage as envisioned by the inventors. Rather we are now talking about the concepts of mobile computing in an effort to further improve the experiences of the people who use these gadgets. It seems that in the future mobile computing will become the new battleground for the heart and soul of technological invention. The consumer community has spoken in terms of identifying this need and therefore the inventors have to respond appropriately.

In analyzing the role and impact of technological invention, we must not forget that these issues are about people and the way that they lead their lives. We cannot divorce technological invention from the practical needs of the populace. After all many of the inventions are a direct response to consumer demands for improvement. Thus the wireless technology revolution came about primarily because consumers were tired of having to manipulate wires. We demand the highest standards of quality before enjoying our electronic gadgets and therefore technological invention has had to respond creatively. The alternative was a failed industry that was inflexible when it comes to dealing with the customer requirements at large.

Generating a Living from Invention

There are specific issues that relate to the income levels for people who participate in invention. Ideally the commercial world would be looking at them as the beginning link in the chain of events that land a product onto the market for the consumer to enjoy. The creativity and hard work that goes into invention ought to be rewarded with some sort of income.

What is really disappointing is the fact that many great inventors are left on the website while the venture capitalists make money from their invention. Whereas the government has been very active in the area of consumer protection, it has not shown the same zeal when it comes to dealing with people who are protecting their inventions.

The first thing that happens is that some people will attempt to break the copyright laws in order to exploit the naivety of the person who is responsible for the invention. In some countries copyright is no longer taken to be a serious matter and people are quite happy to exploit the work of other people under the pretext that it belongs to them. The thinking behind this practice is the mantra that if everyone is doing it then there is no problem with it. The copyright laws are weak as it stands but at the same time little effort is made towards enforcing those laws. What we then have is drift in terms of letting people get away with murder.

Invention and Income Streams
The invention market is seriously harmed if people are stealing copyright. The income of the inventor relies on his or her ability to protect the revenues that come from the resale of their product. If this revenue stream is closed down by cultural problems and corruption then they will not have the income to fund their own lifestyle. That is why it is advisable for invention to be protected by copyright at the earliest opportunity. The inventor also has a duty to watch out for any infringements and deal with them through the court process if that is possible.

Although the courts take a deem view of some copyright infringements the relevant law might have effectively tied their hands. There are prescribed punishments outside the remit of the criminal laws and therefore it becomes difficult to add a really punitive element to the repercussions of blatant breaches. The legal system can be so unsupportive that the individual decides that the best course of action is to completely ignore the copyright issues and get on with their lives. Having seen the court in action, this might not seem to be such a bad idea.

However there has to be an income for people who make invention possible for the rest of the community. Otherwise the economies will come to a standstill and there will be no development within certain sectors of the society. This is not a desirable outcome for either invention or the inventors who work in the business. There has to be a better way.

The creation of invention schemes in the modern world is primarily driven by our desire to have the creature comforts that were denied of our forbearers. Thus the modern home is not complete without the latest electronic equipment of household aids that enable the development of efficient methods of working. On an almost daily basis there is a new invention that is made to improve the lives of people.

The telemarketing and television sector have been particularly useful to those people who take an interest in invention. There are inventors who might very much like to make a living out of their talent but they are locked in by the inability to identify avenues for marketing their products.

The advent of modern marketing techniques has largely removed the influence of this particular problem. There are television channels that specialize in promoting and marketing the invention wares of those who are involved in the business. What happens is that someone will have an idea and then send it to a specialist for a prototype. That idea will then be put on the television for consumers to react. If they like the product, they will buy it and the store will order some more stock. If they do not like it then they will pull that product and move on to something else. It is a brutal system but it ensures that only the things that the public want are marketed and encouraged through the invention schemes.

Pressures on Invention

The life of an inventor is not the easiest to live. They have to put up with various impediments and disappointments before their products are accepted onto the market. During the promotion campaigns the invention is in danger of being stolen by other unscrupulous elements that might see a competitive advantage emerging.

The brutal rejection of the product on national television might turn out to be a harrowing experience. All in all it is not easy to become an inventor. Those that persist might be rewarded when their product acquires international reputation but behind the mask are thousands of failed inventors who have very little to show for their efforts in this area.

The market that inventors deal in is also ambiguous because it does not specify the products that will be bought. It has an element of trial and error that might not suit the temperaments of every person. Without a sponsor and patron, the inventor can become demoralized and lose focus on the things that are important in their line of work. They might give up on invention altogether and instead go for the mundane job that provides very little incentive for work and creativity.

In conclusion I would argue that the life of an inventor is still very challenging in the modern world. We have not yet reached a stage whereby we will fully respect the invention as an integral part of the development of a community or country. Until we resolve this issue, the industry will continue to be unstable and unworkable.

By almost unanimous agreement, it is believed that science is the key to the development of a nation or a community in particular. That is why some governments have gone on record as advocating for the promotion of science as a principal subject for all those who go through the education system. Those who have invested in the sectors that develop invention and science will reap the benefits when they start to market their own products.

In fact there are countries such as Japan which have a budding market for inventions within a specific period of time. These exports of invention have meant that those countries can sustain their economies and improve the lives of the people living in those countries.

Scientific invention is particularly important in the field of healthcare. There are still many diseases that are affecting the generality of humanity without a good prospect for a cure. HIV and AIDS are some of the conditions that rely on the provision of invention to work out a solution to what appears to be a long term problem. However even with the limitation on invention, there has been significant improvement in the treatment of the both these conditions. This shows that invention is working and will continue to work in order to improve the lives of the people who live in the world today.

Scientific Invention

If there was to be a criticism of invention in the scientific field, it would be that the process is not moving fast enough to catch up with the illnesses that are troubling the community. This is the type of impatience that can trouble the inventors in their quest to find solutions. Of course we would all like to have our problems solved by the arrival of some new invention.

However this process has to be completed properly if the invention is to have any meaning to the community. There are very few people who can successfully invent things and therefore efforts should be made to make their lives as comfortable as possible in the circumstances.

The work on the invention trail within the scientific community is a never ending battle because there are always problems to be resolved and the shortage of inventors can become endemic. There will never come a time when the world is completely free of diseases.

What really happens is that the community gets some sort of lull in the problems and then they will erupt after some time. The presence of invention can provide the community with some assurances that their problems will not be left to fester on a long term basis. This is the type of commitment that has to become a centerpiece of our normal lifestyles.

Without invention to support it, the scientific world would be in a lot of problems and therefore credit has to be given to the people who have found tirelessly for the creation of a great atmosphere for investment and development. Perhaps this will become the key to success.

Keeping Nature Safe

For some people nature is a theoretical concept that is not rooted in the reality of living. However for other people nature is all about living. When we see the hungry lioness hunting down a resentful buffalo, we know that nature is at work. Those with a religious inclination have used nature to impose their own conservative adventures. It is rather ironic that those same people are the ones who do not seem concerned about the problem with destroying nature reserves.

The truth is that as human beings we have a great responsibility for looking after nature and passing it on to future generations. This responsibility has not always been taken seriously and some quarters of political thought have taken negative steps to prevent the growth of nature.

The degradation of the environment is one of the clearest signs that the human race is not really protecting nature. There are plenty of natural resources but they are not receiving the kind of care and attention that one would expect in such a development context. Rather we are obsessed with consuming things. We greedily search out all the fruits of nature and waste them for our own selfish enjoyment. The only time that we think about nature is when it strikes back by way of natural disasters. The politicians have caught onto the fact that nature studies and exploitation can become a source of great revenues. They have therefore developed tourism industries that aim to exploit nature to the maximum. As the resources dwindle, we will start to fight over the remainder.

Nature Strikes Back

The protection of a nature is no longer the preserve of our national administrations but rather a responsibility that can be embraced by everyone and anyone who is interested in the development of humanity. It seems that the study and exploitation of nature has become the norm in modern societies. Sometimes it even seems that people in the past were much better at using and protecting nature than the modern communities. More than ever before, our farming practices are now producing food at the cost of the destruction of the soil and the habitat of birds, bees and animals. Although some types of organic farms are indeed sustainable businesses, in part funded by the pocket of eco-conscious consumers who are willing to pay more for fine organic wine and other produce; overall, nature is being devastated by our lack of care for the land and foresight. If we take the example of our relationship with the land, modern children have lost that contact. For them food comes from the fridge and they express no interest in farming or other related activities.

Working from the perspective that nature is something to be appreciated it seems that the work that we put in will have to focus on certain issues that surround the environment and its usage. The political conservatives might eventually come round to the suggestion that nature is work protecting as we exploit it. When we talk of what is natural, we must also think about replacing what we have used and giving the earth a break from over exploitation.

That is the challenge for the modern environmentalist movement that is threatened from both sides by the sinister forces of conservative thought. Nature is a gift and we must not abuse it because we are not the people who have created it. The devastating effects of retaliation are well known.

Nature and the Next Generation

When one critically examines the way that we are using nature today, the future does not look bright at all. There is an insidious entry of people whose main interest is in advancing the concept of selfish capitalism. Everything and everyone must be exploited in the name of capitalism in order to embed a culture of consumerism. The concerns about the abuse of nature are normally brushed aside with insults directed at effete liberals who refuse to accept the realities of modern life.

However it does not have to be like this. We can all work in partnership to ensure that the nature reserves that we have at our disposal are used in a responsible manner that concentrates on the benefits of the community in the long term.

One of the more intelligent princes in the European Union has constantly talked about the need to preserve things for the future generations. This type of preservative work is not about objects of wealth but rather recognition that nature is being depleted at a very fast rate. If we take the example of energy resources, it becomes very clear that throughout our economic development we have not considered the impact of our lives on nature. It is only when we have realized that the party is over that we are now panicked into making piecemeal decisions that are designed to halt the rapid loss of nature reserves. There is a frustrating emphasis on the present which completely ignores the past and the future.

Nature and Public Action

The vast majority of the people in the developed world are living with the express purpose of enjoying themselves no matter what the impact is on the nature reserves that we still hold. Of course there is a price to pay but one wonders whether we are really willing to pay that price. When the storms started raging, the word community was spooked into giving vast amounts of foreign aid. Meanwhile they ignored the real problem of the over exploitation of nature reserves. This is not something that can easily be swept under the carpet. As long as we continue to over exploit nature, the effects will continue to be devastating and will affect all areas of our lives in due course.

Some people might argue that the banning of blatant consumerism is the first sign of socialism and is not about dealing with the problems of nature within the environment. However the problem with blatant consumerism still remains the fact that has unfortunate effect on nature. Eggs that could have been grown in the backyard are imported from miles away at vast expense in terms of the money itself and the carbon footprint. The lessons are there to be learnt but if people ignore them then we will learn the hard way. I am of the view that nature will destroy us if we do not take the time to look after it and pass it on to the future generations.

Classifying Nature

The programming on televisions tends to leave us with the impression that nature is all about the battles for survival that wild animals face. We forget to look at nature as a natural resource that needs to be protected at all costs. There are a number of things that collectively form the concept that is nature. In fact one can argue that the foundations of a nation are rooted in the natural resources that it has.

The developed countries will master their nature and natural resources in an effort to improve the lives of the citizens of that country. That is why Norway will spend its oil revenues on building infrastructure while some African countries will spend the revenues on buying private jets for the rich and famous. The difference in priorities will directly translate into the relative prosperity of the people living in the different nations. They both have the natural resources but are exploiting them in different ways.

Nature and Citizenship

In fact there are many instances where the countries that are not blessed with nature will outstrip those which have abundance. Once again the examples in Africa are salutary. For example there are countries in Africa were seeds will grow naturally once they fall on the ground. There is no need for watering and pesticides because nature will have taken care of things. On the other end of the spectrum is a country that is in the midst of a very dangerous desert but they then create avenues for agriculture through irrigation and land acquisition. We then have the ludicrous situation whereby a country like Egypt is giving food aid to a country in sub-Saharan African. This is all about how people use nature to develop the lives of their people.

Nature can be both a blessing and a curse. We have all heard about the oil curse that has destroyed communities in some countries. On the other hand other countries which nature has provided with natural gifts will be in danger of being invaded by the glory hunters who want to have a piece of that nature. Nature can also react quite angrily to efforts to destroy it. For example the degradation of the environment has led to horrendous storms that have destroyed lives and property. Nature is dangerous and challenging but it can also provide the focus for a developed society that is founded on the principles of controlled uses of natural resources.

The vast nature resources that are available to the community ought to be used for the express purpose of delivering a better quality of life for the ordinary person who wishes to enjoy their citizenship in peace. It is also imperative that the nature reserves that we are talking about are protected from the sinister acquisition of powerful nations.

Planning for the Preservation of Nature

There has to be some sort of planning process if nature is to be protected from the ravages of constant usage. The planning is normally undertaken at national level with the involvement of central government and other organizations. Normally what happens is that the people concerned will have a view to manage the crisis that arises when nature is not used appropriately.

However they sometimes lack the strategic vision that will entail the long term future of the scheme and the people working within the community. The planners do not concentrate on making the protection of nature a national priority. Rather they deal with local issues that may arise from time to time. This is not the type of strategy that gives the people confidence that their leaders are taking nature seriously.

One can take the example of planning permission for buildings within the cities. It is absolutely shocking that some people are allowed to build on water tables and even nature reserves. It is all too easy to lay the blame at the feet of unfettered corruption but there has to be an element of ignorance in this. After all it takes the auspices of the community to work out a strategy for securing their own nature reserves. Those who build on the water tables have to take some responsibility in addition to the standard blame game that occurs within the higher echelons of the administrative structure when problems become apparent. It should be a matter of national pride that nature reserves are maintained and protected.

Nature Reserves

There is an element of enforcement that sometimes defeats the authorities in their efforts to protect nature. For example powerful elements within the governments will flaunt the laws and give the rest of the community a very bad example which forms the basis of their rebellion against planning laws. The thinking in this is that there is one rule for all the people in the community and no one element should be allowed to blatantly disregard the rules in favor of their own selfish motives. If the big shots are breaking the law with impunity then the ordinary person will find no incentive to follow the rules that have been set.

This is not to say that nature is a dead end scheme that does not generate income for the government. On the contrary there are economies which are totally reliant on the provision of tourism in order to support their budgets. For these countries the nature reserves ought to be a valuable resource that is protected with diligence. Instead they ignore the planning requirement of the strategy and merely concentrate on extracting as much utility as possible from the nature that is within their borders. After a limited period of time the nature reserves will be completely exhausted and the nation will go back to square one. It is this type of short sighted attitude that his keeping many nations within the firm grasp of poverty.

A Career in Nature

As the public focus moves onto the protection of the environment there are many opportunities for eh development of a career in nature studies. This does not mean that one has to settle for working in the zoo at all times. There are specific careers that are to do with research and development. Most governments have now implemented a system for nature reservations which provide opportunities for study in this area.

The career development service within the school of the applicant will be able to provide some concrete advice as to the feasibility of the subject as a career building exercise. Of course people will try to go for the traditional professions such as the doctor or the lawyer.

However these professions have great competition and the chances of settling there on a long term basis are not always optimistic. That is why candidates are advised to consider some unusual patterns when they are selecting a career. The study of nature and its impact will prove to be a unique selling point when going for a large variety of jobs. People who are interested conservation can have a very colorful career in exotic places where they have the opportunity to learn about wild animals and different people on earth. It is not a job that is limited to the office but can provide opportunities to do field work.

Nature Professionals

The great thing about nature studies is that they can take the skills from both sciences is arts in order to create the well rounded career professional. For example those who study geography might use their skills in combination with chemistry to do the necessary research in their field of work. The opportunities for training and development are plenty and it just needs a little initiative and drive to be able to deliver the results in terms of a great career in nature studies. Those who have ambitions for earning very high salaries will know that such objectives are achievable with the right kind of experience. Ambition and dedication are the keys to achieving the full benefits of a career in nature studies and those who take the effort to aim there will eventually get their ideal career situation. Nature is a land of opportunities for all.

It is a pity that many career choices are limited to a narrow gap of choice professions rather than looking at the wider context that provides opportunities to work in a variety of fields that are outside the mainstream. That is the beauty and challenge of nature studies.

People may shake their heads and wonder why such a career is being chosen but the results will speak for themselves when the right candidate has managed to build a formidable set of skills that can take them through the process of learning and research. Young people should certainly consider a career in nature studies because it can lead to a steady but interesting job that will give them a good lifestyle.

Countries Begin to Explore their Energy Options

Rather late in the day some countries are beginning to develop energy policies in line with the needs that have been identified nationally. Typically these policies will focus on the need to maintain the citizens within a comfortable bubble so that they can continue to vote in the same governments over and over again.

Those who try to offer an alternative energy policy are shut down as being anti business. In fact many of the green parties have some wonderful ideas about energy policy but they have been effectively shut down by the presence of the right wing lobby which closes its eyes to the plight of those people who are unable to access rich energy sources.

There is some secrecy about the energy policies of certain countries because they are unethical or hurt the political and imperial ambitions of those nations. Thus when wars are ostensibly staged to bring peace yet the underlying issue is the access to the oil reserves; one loses confidence in the whole energy policy debate. It has become nothing more than a smokescreen for naked imperialistic ambitions and glory hunting. Those who point out this trend are shut down as being unpatriotic or somehow naive in their assumptions about the machinations of their governments.

Going Beyond Good Intentions

The debate at the moment is not so much about the existing energy policies but rather an acknowledgement that many governments have never had a policy in the first place. They relied on the ability to manage the crisis as they come about without looking at the long term future of their nations. The case of Ukraine is telling because energy for them has become a ransom for a powerful neighbor. The neighbor is able to switch the energy on and off depending on the relationship at the time. The relationship must cause alarm for those countries which do not have sufficient energy reserves. They will have to subjugate themselves to the energy suppliers in order to get any relief from the drought of energy resources.

In discussing the energy policies one must not forget the role of the consumers in creating demand for energy. If people do not take ownership and responsibility for the issues that happen to them in the energy cycle, then they will place additional burdens on their governments to deliver alternative energy sources. The development of an effective energy policy has to come from the people themselves rather than relying on the services of other government agencies to implement what is considered to be good practice. If both the governments and the individuals concerned understand the implications of their energy policies, it will make the planet a safer planet.

The creation of an energy policy involves rather more than mere sound bites and pontifications. It requires that the leaders do their work and inspire the rest of the community to join the battle for energy efficiency. The battle can be won and must be won in order to secure the future of the earth.

Energy as an Environmental Issue

The protection of the environment has become a priority for many national governments due to the influence of various pressure groups and the commitments that have be given out to the general public in terms of enforcing responsible government whenever possible. The ability to use the planet in a responsible manner is no longer the preserve of a fringe of campaigners who have spent a lifetime trying to convince the general public that it is not prudent or responsible to waste all the resources that are due to go to the future generations.

Some nations are addicted to the use of energy in all its forms. For example they will buy cars that are not energy efficient and which put an additional burden on the oil resources that the country may be able to access in the long run. They also mean that the use of oil has an impact on the disposable income that is available to the nation in terms of building economic growth. There are also other benefits in terms of reducing the impact on the state which has to subsidize those citizens who are unable to afford the essential things in life.

It therefore seems that the protection of the environment has to necessarily be tied up with the energy policy of a country. There are many leaflets that tell the community about the various energy saving systems that are available to them in the short term and which can improve the standing of the economy if done on a consistent basis.

Balancing Energy Policy

One of the things that are very worrying is that there are vast sways of political persuasion which refuses to acknowledge the impact of human activity on the environment. Their mantra is to spend and spend until they get their fill. For some people this is an unacceptable use of resources and does not foster the type of responsibility that is crucial for the economic development of the nation. However it must be remembered that these conservative voices have been on the wrong side of history when it comes to different elements of the histories of the world. It then seems that they will continue this pattern when it comes to energy policy.

An effective environmental protection policy also has to consider the fact that the nation has a real need for energy in order to foster economic development. This is the type of commitment that has build economies over time and ensured prosperity for the Western world. It would then appear to be entirely counterproductive if the powers that be decided to stop the use of energy for economic development. Environmental issues are important but they cannot be more important than the duty to maintain a certain minimum living standard for the general population. The failure to plan for the energy needs of the community has brought the nations into the situation of global warming. At the same time they cannot afford to go back to being the underdeveloped economies of the past.

Cooling Down on Proliferation

Although politics and a hint or racism is at the heart of the Iranian conflict with some Western powers at the behest of Israel, it seems that energy could be one of the issues that drive this relationship. According to Iran they would like to become a recognized nuclear power because they use the power for energy purposes.

The veracity of these claims is rather shaky given the reputation that Iran has built over the years in terms of ratcheting up the pressure and refusing to comply with the instructions that are being imposed on it. However nuclear power can be an interesting source of energy.

Rather than fighting one another both Israel and Iran might decide to have some sort of energy creation system that would feed the entire Middle East. The dependence on oil is already crippling some economies in terms of their income and the ability to implement an independent foreign policy. That is why the use of nuclear power as a source of energy is quite attractive. Traditionally the nuclear power has been associated with the sinister motives of developed countries but now there is an avenue to rescue it into modern economic life.

Making Money not War

The use of nuclear power for energy purposes is both practical and ethical because it taps into the natural resources that a country has and then matches them to the need within the country which creates a perfect balance for economic development. It also turns nuclear energy away from the sinister motives of weapon manufacture. That way those people who have been campaigning for the voluntary reduction of nuclear weapons within the world will get their wish and there will be plenty of energy for other developmental purposes.

The one thing that tends to derail any efforts at bringing the nuclear question to a halt is the presence or absence of political will. The issue with political will is that most countries have been frightened into believing that when they stop gathering weapons, their opponents will successfully attack their nations. In fact certain nations freely admit that the residual nuclear weapons that they have are all for the purposes of acting as a deterrent.

The upkeep of nuclear weapons is very expensive and has left some wondering whether it is really worth it to continue to keep those systems when there has been no major attack in so many years. The proponents of nuclear weapons then counter by saying that the mere fact that there has not been an attack is proof that the deterrent is working and must never be removed. The debate will continue to rage on depending on which side of the arguments the reader has chosen to fall on. The bottom line is that the problems that are related to the energy industry and nuclear power will not go away and each super power has to come up with a strategy to reduce its output. If the funds happen go into making energy then it will be a win for the economy.

Conserving Energy

A number of communities have come up with interesting methods of preserving the little energy that they have and ensuring that their children have a bright and prosperous future. The conservation of energy is not limited as a responsibility but covers the entirety of human existence and practice in an effort to reduce the impact on the environment.

It also avoids the natural wastage that happens when people are not well informed about the impact of their actions on the energy consumption levels. In order to achieve balance some governments have let the people use the energy as they see fit but have place in some controls which are meant to prevent the over exploitation of natural resources.

When one is looking at the usage of energy within the home it becomes clear that there is something very wrong with the attitudes of the majority of the population to the reality of energy policy. Some people are quite happy to leave the lights on all night just because they can afford it. In an effort to highlight the ethical implications of such attitudes, various governments have come up with schemes that target specific energy uses. This is done with the express aim of getting them to acknowledge their responsibilities to the general community and their abilities to deal with the realities of the modern environment.

Energy Efficient World

Dealing with energy conservation measures does not have to be limited to big government initiatives. There are great examples of various people who have successfully reduced their impact on the environment through common sense approaches to living in the modern age. Government legislation and initiatives should be the last refuge of those who wish to implement energy efficiency policies on a national basis. Living in a family home is all about compromise and therefore there can be some compromise when it comes to the usage of energy. There is no reason to leave the light bulbs on when no one is working at home. Likewise it seems a waste of energy to boil water when no one is going to use it.

If more and more families buy into the principles of energy efficiencies some of the difficult energy problems that the world is facing can be resolved in a relatively short space of time. However if we continue to insist on laying the blame for energy efficiency problems at the doorstep of the government the problems that we face will never end and it is likely that the environment will punish us for this. The great thing is that the younger generation has started to take notice and it is insisting that the older generation stops ignoring the situation. This is a welcome development that can only lead to great results for the world community at large.

With the better use of energy the world can look forward to a time when people will only use items for the purpose for which they were intended. They will also use those items in a socially responsible manner.

Democratizing Energy Resources

One of the key battle grounds for all nations in the future will be the use of energy resources. As the world population continues to grow beyond the resource base that is available at the moment, it has become clear that some measures will have to be taken to restore the balance of resources and human need. These resources come from a variety of indicators including the natural resources. Politicians are not talking about energy independence as if the world is on the verge of ending. The process of moving towards energy independence might involve the forceful acquisition of assets that belong to other countries we have seen some of the resultant chaos in Iraq.

On the other hand it would appear to be unsustainable that some countries are relying on their natural resources to hold the world on ransom. Energy is an essential item for those countries that lie within the colder areas of the world. If no effort is made to democratize the energy sources for them one can safely say that they will be in a great deal of trouble.

Revolutions have been implemented on the basis of energy needs. When the winter hits, the elderly start to die if they do not have an adequate energy source. This then becomes a heated national security issue that can lead the different parties into outright war with one another.

Energy in a Global Village

The United Nations Organization does not seem to have a unified strategy for dealing with the issues of resources. Rather they rely on local agreements to settle individual disputes between countries. It is only in the recent wake of the climate change disasters that serious consideration is being given to the implications of the policies of the big powers in relation to energy usage. As it appears that the Middle East will not let go of its oil so easily, the problem of energy reserves will have to be dealt with from the perspective of a domestic strategy.

Whole economies will depend on the ability to mobilize the energy resources if they are going to survive into the future. The principle of the survival of the fittest will have to test the nations seriously. There is talk of alternative energy sources but the arguments are not particularly convincing and the target market is not particularly enthusiastic. Moreover the costs of modern technology are so high that many people wonder whether they can be delivered to the majority of the human race.

Those who have a social conscience outside their self interest recognize the dire straits that the human race finds itself in when we talk of energy resources. There are choices to be made if the politicians can get off their pulpits and get working. For example we might decide to use the energy resources that we have and hope for the best. Alternatively we might try to conserve until the reserves run out. The other solution is to find new sources of energy.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are an increasing popular technology for various useful applications. Among other things, RFID tags are used at libraries, in passports, and for quick passage of toll booths.

The technology has now been taken a step futher. The invention of semiconducting ink could allow grocery store items to be scanned without the typical conveyer and bar code scanning process. The semiconducting ink, laced with carbon nanotubes, can be printed directly onto packages. The “new” type of printed bar code could hold information such as price, as well as information about how long the item has been on the shelf.

Due to the recent findings of being able to print directly onto a package, it costs only about three cents for each item. In comparison, the current use of RFID tags cost about fifty cents per implementation.

Researcher are still working on being able to increase the storage size of the new tags, but the technology is there. It is expected to get the tags to hold 96 bits of information in a 3-square-centimeter size tag.

Otoplasty is the surgical alteration or restoration of the ear. For those with a congenital ear deformity or damage resulting from an accident, there has been very little that could be done to reconstruct an ear. This is because the ear’s cartilage is uniquely shaped and cannot be found elsewhere on the body. While it’s true that donor cartilage can be harvested from a patient’s rib, it’s a completely different type; making it unsuitable for the ear. Therefore, plastic surgeons have been left with few options when it comes to otoplasty… but that’s about to change.

Dr. Anthony Atala of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina has successfully pioneered a technique to grow an actual human ear in a petri dish, using a small tissue sample from the patient’s ear. Not only will this revolutionize otoplasty and plastic surgery, but Dr. Atala states the Institute is currently working to apply this same technique to over 22 different organs and tissues.

Below is a recent clip from 60 Minutes demonstrating the growth of an ear:

The diamond, nicknamed the ‘Cullinan’, was cut into nine large stones and about 100 small stones. The largest cut stone, known as ‘First Star of Africa’ or ‘Cullinan I’, is 530 carats. This diamond was the largest cut fine quality colorless diamond in the world until the ‘Golden Jubilee Diamond’ was discovered in 1985. The Golden Jubilee Diamond is a whopping 545.67-carats!

Camels are well-known for their ability to retain large amounts of water in their hump… Right? No, not exactly. Against popular belief, camels don’t hold any water in their hump. Their hump is actually used to store fat. But in all fairness, camels can and do drink a lot of water. Camels are able to drink up to 20 gallons of water at a time which is stored in the animal’s bloodstream rather than their hump.

From animals to plants, and even the clouds that float about our heads, there are some things in nature that can hold incredible amounts of water.

One plant that is famous for its ability to store large quantities of water is the cactus. While the size and type of cactus determine how much it can hold, about 90% of a cactus’ body is devoted to storing water. The famous Saguaro Cactus of the Southwestern U.S. expands like an accordian after rainfall soaking up as much water up as possible. A signle Saguaro Cacti can hold a ton of water!

Another one of nature’s water retainers are clouds. A cloud’s ability to retain water is immense. It’s a hard to say what single cloud holds but according to the National Weather Service, “one inch of rain over one square mile equals 17.4 million gallons of water weighing 143 million pounds.” Wow.

On January 21, 1971, Pluto crossed Neptune’s orbit making Pluto the 8th planet from the Sun. On February 11, 1999, Pluto crossed back over Neptune’s orbit to regain its position as the 9th planet from the Sun. It will stay this way for over 200 years. A visual image of the two planets’ orbits can be seen here.

Despite the “crossing of orbits” between the two planets, they will never collide with each other. This is due to two reasons. The first reason is due to their orbits being in resonance. This means that for every two orbits Neptune makes around the Sun, Pluto goes around three times. When Pluto is close to the crossing point, Neptune is somewhere entirely different on its orbit.

The second reason for no such collision is due to the fact that Pluto has a higher orbital plane than Neptune. According to NASA, Pluto will actually never come closer than two billion kilometers from Neptune.

Renewable energy, defined as resources that are naturally replenished, include wind, rain, sunlight, water currents and geothermal heat. Our modern day renewable energy techniques may have been introduced much earlier in time than some would think. For instance, did you realize that the first wind turbine to generate electricity was built in 1888?

History dates back watermills to 2,000 years ago and windmills to over 1,000 years ago. But back then, these machines were used for their mechanical output in jobs such as grinding grain and textile production. This was well before our discovery of modern electricity usage.

First in Hydropower
The first hydropower plant to generate electricity was built in 1882 in Appleton, Wisconsin. It produced 12.5 kW of power, not very much by today’s standards but enough to power the machinery in two paper mills and a private home.

First in Windpower

As previously stated, the first wind turbine electricity producer was the 1888 wind turbine built by Charles Brush in Cleveland, Ohio. This 80,000 pound monster stood 60 feet high and had a diameter of 56 feet. This wind turbine produced 12 kW of power, nearly the same output as the Appleton hydroplant. It was used to charge batteries in the cellar of Brush’s mansion for 20 years. To understand how large the wind turbine was, find the man cutting the grass to the right of it.

First in Solar Energy

The first solar cell was built by Charles Fritts in 1883, but it only had an efficiency of around 1%. Modern solar panel technology made its arrival in 1954 thanks to three inventors from Bell Laboratories. By 1955 a telephone carrier began using solar panels for energy and in 1958 the U.S. satellite Vanguard 1 was launched into space equipped with solar panels.

First in Geothermal Energy

The first commercial geothermal power plant was built in 1911 in Larderello, Italy. This plant was the only producer of geothermal electricity until New Zealand built a plant in 1958. In 1960, the first U.S. geothermal plant was built at The Geysers in California.

In certain cases, some renewable energies have been around for over 100 years! Of course there have been many beneficial improvements along the way and there will be many more improvements to come.

Wind turbines, a rapidly growing sector of electricity generation, produce varied amounts of electricity based on a few variables. These variables include the size of the wind turbine, also known as power rating, and how fast the wind travels at the turbine’s location.

Wind turbines have a power rating usually ranging from 250 watts (enough to charge a battery) to 10-kW (enough to power a typical household) to 6-MW (enough to power over 1600 households).

The world’s largest wind turbines, produced in Northern Germany, stand at a height of 650 ft and has a diameter of 413 ft. The world’s largest wind farm is located in Texas at the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center. This wind farm has 421 wind turbines which produce enough energy to power 220,000 homes per year. In 2006, wind energy produced enough electricity in the U.S. to serve more than 2.4 million households. Although this is a fairly large number of households, it is only about 0.4 percent of the nation’s total electricity consumption.

Wind energy is growing rapidly in the United States as well as other parts of the world. From 2002 to 2006 wind-generated electricity increased by 2.5 times.

When answering the question of “how many species exist?”, there is no easy way of doing it. Although there is no certain answer, scientists can estimate that there is likely somewhere between 5 million to 100 million different species. It’s such a difficult question to answer because you have to realize that smallest of life forms are included. Insects, bacteria and all microbes need to be accounted for.

As of August 2007, about 2 million species had been identified. Scientists continue to discover new species all the time. A ten year study in the Eastern Himalayas led scientists to find over 350 new species. Read more about these discoveries on Science Daily.

Another puzzle for scientists to figure out is how many species of plants and animals have gone extinct on Earth since life began. This question, of course being a much harder one to answer, is virtually impossible.

To stay up to date on the latest findings, Science Daily features a section of their website devoted to news of recent specie discoveries.

The Great Red Spot is a giant storm on Jupiter’s surface. It is similar to a hurricane but much larger in size. In fact, three earths could fit in the size of the Great Red Spot.

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot was first discovered in the 1600’s by astronomer Robert Hooke. The longevity of this storm is at least partially due to the fact that storm never goes over land. Similar to when hurricanes reach land, they lose steam, but the Great Red Spot never encounters land because Jupiter’s surface does not have any.

This CNN news article from earlier this year suggest the declining size of the Great Red Spot. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have discovered that the size of the storm has decreased 15% between 1996 and 2006.

Its possible that the storm will disappear someday. Glenn Orton of NASA says “the Great Red Spot may not always be the largest and strongest storm on Jupiter.” New storms are continually spawning and dying, but the Great Red Spot is still king.

Four consecutive days during the winter of 1899 brought extreme harsh conditions to North America. Known as “The Great Cold Wave”, many record-setting low temperatures which were set still hold to this day in many cities.

On February 14, Tallahassee, Florida saw temperatures as cold as -2°F (-18.9° C). This is still the coldest temperature ever recorded in Florida. Other locations that saw rare low temperatures include Dallas, Texas at -10°F (-23.3° C), Kansas City, Missouri at -22°F (-30° C), and Scottsbluff, Nebraska at -45°F (-42.8° C). All records which still stand.

This was the year when the Mississippi River froze its entire length down to the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, some ice even flowed into the Gulf. In places like Cairo, Illinois the thickness of the ice was 13 inches. Ice two inches thick reached New Orleans and ice an inch thick was observed at the mouth of the river.

During the approximate four day stretch, many places were lucky if the high temperature reach zero degrees. The Blizzard of 1899 was a benchmark storm for the South. Florida still measures their snowfall totals for a day or storm against the 1899 storm, sometimes referred to as the “greatest cold snap in American history.”

Editor’s Note: I mentioned Cairo, Illinois in this article. When doing research to find the city’s location, I came across this article. Take a read if you have time, it’s quite interesting.

The past week on the Discovery Channel has been dedicated to the often feared and dangerous dominators of the ocean. Yes, of course… sharks! Once again the Discovery Channel is featuring Shark Week. Shark Week premiered in 1987 and has been on every summer since.

To show our appreciation, we have decided to provide you with a fascinating list of the most interesting shark facts:

The biggest shark is the whale shark which can grow up to 50 feet long.

The dusky shark can exert a force of 132 pounds with a single bite.

Most sharks live for 20-30 years but the spiny dogfish shark can live over 100 years.

A shark may use 20,000 teeth during its lifetime.

There are over 350 types of sharks, and researchers believe there are still many more undiscovered.

The bull shark is best known for its ability to travel in both salt water and fresh water.

In 1937, fisherman in Illinois captured a five foot long shark that swam 600 miles up the Mississippi River.

Most sharks swim at 20-40 miles per hour while the Mako shark is said to swim up to 60 miles per hour.

It’s often said that sharks can’t get cancer. This is UNTRUE. Read More

When lightning strikes a tree: Lightning can definitely do some damage to trees. The University of Minnesota has provided a guide about lightning strikes on trees. Along with a few pieces of useful information, the guide is quoted as saying, “A lightning strike can be a traumatic experience for both the tree and its caretaker.” I guess if it’s your favorite tree.

When lightning strikes a car: When a bolt of lightning strikes an automobile, the outer surface and frame of the car will carry the electricity. It often discharges through one of the tires leaving the inside occupants unharmed. The image of the car lightning strike is from a man-made lightning bolt. You can see the electricity leaving the car through the front tire.

When lightning strikes a boat: During any year, boat owners are at a 1.2 in 1,000 risk of their boat being hit by lightning. A steel boat often receives no damage or very minimal damage from lightning strikes. In other cases, boats made of wood or fiberglass can be damaged with cracks, electronic failure and even reports of boats sinking. 33% of all lightning strikes on boats come from Florida.

When lightning strikes an airplane: You may not know it but lightning strikes on airplanes are quite frequent. It is estimated that lightning strikes each airplane in the U.S. commercial fleet at least once per year. The last plane crash due to a lightning strike happened in 1967 when it caused the fuel tank to explode. The below video shows a jumbo jet taking off during a thunderstorm.

A bolt of lightning can heat air around it to 50,000 degrees F.

A lightning bolt can contain 100,000,000 volts of electricity and be more than 5 miles long.

There’s an average of 25,000,000 lightning strikes every year.

On average, 67 people die from lightning strikes in the U.S. every year. This is more deaths than caused by tornadoes and hurricanes.

A lightning bolt can travel at 60,000 miles per second.

80% of all people struck by lightning survive. Although, they often have long-term injuries.

The Transatlantic cable, laid across the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, made communication much quicker between North America and Europe. Prior to the Transatlantic cable, communication was only possible via taking a ship across the ocean.

There were five attempts to lay the cable- in 1857, two in 1858, in 1865 and in 1866. The first attempt to lay the cable in 1857 was unsuccessful, but an attempt in 1858 led to the first official telegram communication. The first telegram, which took 17 hours to send, was a message from Queen Victoria to President James Buchanan. It took a daunting 2 minutes to send a single letter across. This cable would later fail when excess voltage to the line was applied in hopes for a quicker transmission.

The most successful cable of the era was laid in 1866. This Tranatlantic cable could send 8 words per minute. By the 20th century, cable transmission reached 120 words per minute through use of relays which amplified the signal along the way.

Transmitting messages, which used to take atleast a week between the two continents by ship, was drastically cut with the creation of the Transatlantic cable. It was a huge technological step forward for its time. Two of the original successful cables ceased to work in 1872 and 1877, but by then there were others working with greater capacity. It was not until the 1960’s that the first satellites offered a serious alternative to the cable lines.

We must start off by saying that a shooting star isn’t actually a star at all. The streaks of light that we see are actually caused by meteoroids entering our planet’s atmosphere. As the meteoroid passes through the atmosphere it burns up and produces a trail of light. As it burns, we call it a meteor and this is what we mistake “shooting stars” to be. If the meteor doesn’t completely burn up in the atmosphere, it hits Earth as a new name, a meteorite.

Shooting stars can be produced by particles as small as a grain of sand! This being said, there are millions of shooting stars everyday. They happen during daytime hours and nighttime hours alike. When you look up at the sky though, you can only see about .005 percent of the total area of the sky. Even with this limited viewing range, on a typical night expect to see a shooting star every ten minutes to fifteen minutes.
